A common misconception about tribal art in Washington state is that the totem pole is a symbol of Seattle, not the representation of one of its tribes. The reason totem poles are associated with Seattle is that a group of Seattle men discovered them in Alaska in 1899.
Puget Sound is also home to Chief Si'ahlbe, the leader of both the Suquami and Duwamite tribes. He was the first chief of DuwAmish country, which now makes up the Seattle metropolitan area, and was one of the leaders in the creation of Seattle and the original name of the city.
